Warming Muscle Rub with Common Herbs

A simple warming salve using herbs from your garden or easily purchased dried herbs. Perfect for sore muscles, stiff joints, or general aches and pains.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup dried rosemary
  • 1/2 cup dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup dried sage
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (start with less if sensitive)
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons beeswax
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

Oil Preparation:

Combine all dried herbs with olive oil in a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours. The cayenne will give the oil a slight orange tint and warming properties.

Important Safety:

Strain very thoroughly through fine muslin to remove all cayenne particles. Test a small amount on your skin first to check heat level.

Finishing the Salve:

Warm the strained oil and add beeswax until desired consistency. Pour into containers and add peppermint oil once slightly cooled.

Application:

Massage gently into sore muscles or stiff joints. Wash hands thoroughly after use. The warming sensation should be pleasant, not burning.

How It Helps:

Rosemary stimulates circulation and has anti-inflammatory properties. Thyme provides antimicrobial benefits. Sage adds additional anti-inflammatory action. Cayenne creates gentle warming that helps increase blood flow to the area.

Caution:

Not for broken skin. Keep away from eyes and sensitive areas. Start with small amounts to test tolerance.
