Honey and Thyme Cough Syrup

This gentle cough syrup uses common kitchen herbs to soothe coughs and scratchy throats. Much simpler than complex formulations but very effective.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup fresh thyme (or 2 tablespoons dried)
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Making the Base:

Simmer thyme and sage in water for 15 minutes, covered. This extracts the beneficial compounds from the herbs. Strain out all plant material.

Creating the Syrup:

Let the herbal tea cool to warm (under 40°C) to preserve honey’s beneficial properties. Stir in honey until dissolved, then add vinegar and lemon juice.

How to Use:

Adults: 1-2 teaspoons every 2-3 hours for cough Children over 2: 1/2-1 teaspoon every 3-4 hours

Storage:

Keep refrigerated for up to 4 weeks. Shake before use as natural settling may occur.

Thyme contains natural compounds that help suppress coughs and fight bacteria. Sage soothes irritated throat tissues. Honey coats the throat and has antimicrobial properties. Apple cider vinegar helps preserve the syrup and adds beneficial acids.

Important:

Not suitable for babies under 1 year due to honey. If cough persists more than a week or worsens, consult a healthcare provider.
