Elderberry Syrup for Families

A simplified version of traditional elderberry syrup that’s safe for the whole family and uses easily available ingredients. Perfect for immune support during cold and flu season.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup dried elderberries
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, sliced
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Simple Method:

Put elderberries, water, and spices in a pot. Bring to boil, then simmer gently for 30-40 minutes until liquid reduces by half. The mixture should be deep purple and smell fruity.

Finishing:

Strain through a fine sieve, pressing berries to extract juice. Let cool to warm (not hot) before stirring in honey and lemon juice.

Family Dosages:

Adults: 1 tablespoon daily for prevention, every 2-3 hours when unwell Children (over 1 year): 1 teaspoon daily for prevention, every 3-4 hours when unwell

Storage:

Keeps in the fridge for 2-3 months. The syrup should taste sweet-tart with warming spice notes.

Elderberries are packed with antioxidants and have been shown to help reduce the length and severity of cold and flu symptoms. The added spices provide additional immune and digestive support.

Safety Note:

Only use ripe, dark purple elderberries. Red or unripe berries can cause stomach upset. Always buy from reputable sources if not foraging yourself.
